The Healthy ORT Program: on the Connection Between the Beauty Industry and a Healthy Lifestyle

Healthy ORT is a learning program teaching a healthy lifestyle, developed at the ORT Network’s Center for Research and Development, in collaboration with the ORTov team, the “Mehayom” (“Starting Today”) Association for a healthy and active lifestyle to prevent diabetes, led by Prof. Itamar Raz, and the Otzma (“Power”) project. It develops among participants an experiential and thought-provoking awareness of the three components that promote a healthy lifestyle: proper nutrition, balanced physical activity, and the promotion of a positive body image. Paying attention to physical health is important for both the physical and the mental welfare of each of us, but it is a task that cannot be taken for granted.

The beauty industry affects the way we treat ourselves. It sometimes sets us unattainable goals, but at the same time it allows us to learn different ways of expressing ourselves by choosing our appearance. The tension between the positive and negative aspects of this industry raises the question: should the beauty industry be restricted to keep young people’s self-image from harm?

Among the various contents of the program, one of the activities that have been developed requires pupils to critically study the industry and its implications: to investigate the different stands of various participants in the beauty industry, to ask questions, and to express their position when putting the beauty industry on ‘a social trial’.
