In a heartwarming display of international educational collaboration, ORT’s R&D Center teamed up with the Ministry of Science and Education of the Government of Azerbaijan in 2019. This partnership has flourished since its inception.
Over the years, this collaboration has involved the training of hundreds of teachers and school principals from Azerbaijan by Israeli educators. The innovative curricula and teacher training developed by the Israeli team have had a lasting impact on Azerbaijan’s education system. Azerbaijani educators have visited Israel for training sessions, and the Israeli team has reciprocated by visiting Baku for further rounds of training and mentoring. Azerbaijani educators have had the opportunity to explore and engage with some of ORT’s best programs, such as ISTEAM and Future Ready, including programs focusing on nanotechnology, neuroscience, and immersive learning, among others.
A significant milestone occurred in September 2022, with the submission of a roadmap report by the ORT R&D team after an in-depth investigation in Azerbaijan. This report outlined a master plan for assimilating the vision, pedagogy, and principles of the “Innovative Azerbaijani School,” setting a clear path for future collaborations.
One of the most impactful aspects of this collaboration has been a unique mentoring program in which three best school principals from ORT Israel traveled to Azerbaijan to observe and interact with six schools and their principals. This delegation, comprising the principals of three of ORT’s schools – Tzipi Ben Tulila, Ilan Forster, and Tal Reiss – alongside members of the R&D team, spent two full days at each school, observing classes, projects, and engaging with students and staff to better understand Azerbaijan’s educational landscape.
The reciprocal visit to Israel, involving the six principals from Azerbaijan, is eagerly anticipated, promising further enriching exchanges and mutual learning opportunities. Despite the challenges posed by the current situation in Israel, this collaboration stands as a testament to the enduring bond between Israel and Azerbaijan, fostering a deep appreciation and respect between the two nations.
Reflecting on their experiences, the Israeli mentors shared their thoughts. Ilan Forster, principal of Ort Karmiel, described it as “an instructive and enriching experience,” highlighting the warmth and enthusiasm of the Azerbaijani educators. Tzipi Ben-Tulila, principal of Ort Boim Kiryat Gat, found the visit “fascinating,” gaining valuable insights into both the Azerbaijani and Israeli education systems. Tal Reiss, principal of Ort Tevon, spoke of the cordial hospitality and the shared desire for learning and progress, noting how the experience opened a space for mutual development.
As this collaboration continues to flourish, it serves as a shining example of how education can transcend borders, fostering understanding, respect, and lifelong learning.
